Rafael
Pascuale Zamora

Rafael Pascuale is an artist born in Lima (1987), Peru. From a very young age, he developed an affinity for self-exploration and trial and error as a way of learning, which led him to become a self-taught artist. His environment was quite Catholic, which led him to focus on the images surrounding this dogma, either as a way to understand his cultural/familial surroundings or to understand his role in the learned religious thought. For Rafael, these images filled with pain, sadism, anguish, and emotionality have a strong influence on his work, not because of their evident religious cult, but because of their great historical impact, their ability to shape contemporary society, and create archetypal images capable of influencing the human being through its evolution. In addition to his fixation on this subject, Rafael developed an interest in various philosophical currents concerning metaphysics, psychology, theories of reality construction, as well as schools of thought such as transcendentalism, Buddhism, and various forms of Eastern thought.
There is also a personal baggage in Pascuale's work, where one of the transcendental themes in his work is the understanding of death as an absolute truth, the philosophical thoughts that revolve around it, and the relationship between the body (as the receptacle of consciousness), fragility (linked to the transience of physical states), time (as the anchor of reality), and the spirit (as an arcane element), with these concepts being a projection of his experiences and his relationship with his own fragility related to the diseases that have afflicted him throughout his life.
Over the years, he developed a self-taught work method, focusing on learning classical artistic techniques of painting, drawing, sculpture, and engraving, showing a clear influence of Italian, Spanish, German, and Dutch Baroque art. This helped him achieve his own language and, based on what he learned, he distanced himself from a realistic approach to images, distorting and manipulating them, thus generating an element that lies beyond the human. These ideas have led to the creation of countless works that converge in a constant search to understand and decipher the human condition.
Rafael bases his work on symbolic elements that represent the concepts of reality construction in all its dimensional states. He seeks to understand the notion of identity related to the projected image of the individual (ego) to the collective states of the human psyche. A cathartic representation of the archetypal self, universal symbols, and manifestations of the subconscious as intrinsic elements of a deeper understanding of humanity.
This has led him to participate in numerous group exhibitions in cities such as
Cuzco and Lima in Peru, as well as being part of the collective exhibition "Awakening" at the Georges Berges Gallery in New York in 2021. He also conducts virtual exhibitions on contemporary art websites and participates in a virtual fair called "Art Motive" in 2021. He held a first small exhibition in 2021 at the "La Rebelde" bookstore in Barranco, Lima, virtually on the English/Turkish gallery page "Marvelous Gallery," where he was also published in their magazine in the March 2021 edition and in their "Top 50 Artists to Look for" in 2022. In October 2022, he had a solo exhibition called "Beyond Flesh and Humanity," which was the culmination of a year of work, in Barranco, Lima, in addition to being part of the grand opening of the "Time Before Death" gallery in New Orleans. In 2023, he was featured in the book "Art and Treasures of Peru" by BCP in its 50th-anniversary edition, with a mention in the section on NeoBaroque Peruvian art. In 2024, he participated in the group exhibition "Enter the Arcane" in Mahalla Berlin on the eve of that year's Berlin Art Week.
In March 2025, he has his first major solo exhibition, "Mirrors of a Lost Humanity," curated by historian Ramon Mujica at the Contemporary Art Museum in Lima, Peru.
Rafael has received honorable mentions in competitions such as the "Mapfre
Arts Award" in 2017 and the "Two Generations" drawing contest at the British Cultural Center in 2018, in addition to being a finalist in the same contest in 2022.
